Balsas
Back in the 1950s before foam was invented, surfboards were
flatter and a bit heavier. They were mostly all solid balsa. Today,
when many are making these as show pieces with a lot of exotic
stringers, I prefer to use individual, hand glued solid balsa similar
to the way they were made back in the day. No CNC computer
shaping on these puppies. I like hand shaping these old style the
way Velzy did on the beach at Malibu back in the late 1940s. I
created my board and fin templates from memory. These are the
types of boards that I honed my surfing skills on as a young boy.
The shapes vary...from the Chip to the Pig to pintails and square
tails. The rocker is very close to flat. The deck and the bottom
have a hull design. The fins vary as well...from solid mahogany
"D" fins to modern shaped multi stringer longboard fins There
are several of variations on these old style shapes. I can try to
dial you in with something pretty close to the real thing.
